The multiple crises of interwar Europe and the right-wing and far-right regimes that profited from them have rarely lacked the attention of historians, especially those focusing on Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany. While Italy and Germany continue to occupy a prominent place, recently adopted methodologies of transnationalism and postcolonialism have provided new insights, refreshed familiar topics, and expanded research to cover the entirety of Europe and beyond. Yet another topic has emerged in response to the erosion of liberal democracy and the surge of authoritarianism across the globe: the debate regarding whether, or to what degree, the authoritarianism of Europe between the wars casts its shadow on the present. This essay begins with a discussion of the contributions of transnationalism and continues with an examination of imperialism and colonialism during the interwar period. It concludes with a brief assessment of the debate, drawn from the books under review, regarding the extent to which the experience of Europe between the wars cuts close to home
