I MPROVED RECORDING techniques with emphasis on true reproduction of recorded sound, make the uses of audio devices for the instruction of music obvious. use of recordings has been an established method for music instruction both in the classroom and for the improvement of music performance. Disc and magnetic recordings have been used by music students and teachers to provide self-instructional improvement especially for developing performance skills. It seems strange, however, that recorded materials have not been widely used to develop aural skills that are needed by all persons in music. use of recorded teaching materials can assist instruction in two ways. First, there has been a need to improve the presentation of materials used to develop students' aural skills in music. Recordings offer the advantages of duplicating the presentation as well as the possibilities of programming for self-presentation. Second, a way is needed to study the problems related to the development of these aural skills. use of recordings offer the possibility of controlled presentation on an individual basis. uses of recorded teaching material are well established in foreign language instruction. In a report prepared by the Council of Chief State School Officers, the statement was made: The learning of a language per se is not so much the learning of a body of content as it is the development of a skill.... It is not something one talks about, it is something one
