This article focuses on changes in the local and international maritime connections of the island of Crete during the period 1877-1913, a period when the transport system and especially merchant shipping was transformed radically on a global scale. By using British and French consular reports, local newspapers and the proceedings of the Assembly’s meetings, the paper traces the development in the regular steamship connections between Crete and other regions as well as the attempts to organize coastal shipping during an era in which Crete finally separated from the Ottoman Empire and joined the nation of Greece
