A practicing white investigator reports reflexively on his experiences in conducting research in black communities, complementing in a more specific sense the comments made by the various black authors in this issue. The established set of beliefs, or ideology, possessed by many “lower class” blacks is seen as important inasmuch as many researchers tend to operate on the assumption that their subjects do not have a set of logically related beliefs about their life in this country. The adequacy of traditional academic training for the conduct of research in black communities is also questioned
