This essay seeks to answer some questions underlying the international conference, 'Blocked Arteries Circulation and Congestion in History' held in London in November 2010, as follows: What is the relationship between the transformation of the build environment and the circulation of goods, capital, information, waste and people?; To what extent is congestion a sign of the successful integration between physically distance places in relation to commercial, financial, industrial, tourist or other networks?; How can one characterise circulation and congestion historically?; Are they part of one and the same thing?; and If so, can history help one to understand their relationship? The authors here attempt to turn circulation and congestion into a cultural and historical problem, as well as an exploration of the relationship between immobility and mobility
