Part II analyses the social composition of the board over time. It locates the membership within the structure of contemporary business elites, in particular identifying the extent to which interlocking directorships connected the GWR with other businesses, both inside and outside the railway industry. Matters of wider concern are touched upon, such as the origins and formation of business elites, the social exclusivity of the board, and the role it played in assimilating members of the landed class into the business world
