This article reports on depictions of death, as seen through memorials set along roadsides. The author notes that recent scholarship has been seen to express an interest in the proliferation of roadside memorials as they present evidence of motoring’s darker side. In this paper, the author explores this darker side of history, showing how memorial practices have changed over time and how the idea of motoring heritage continuously challenges the public in its perception of road death as an inescapable part of history. The research examines more than 400 roadside memorials set along highways, secondary roads and back streets located in several states and territories within Australia and New Zealand between 1989 and 2004. The author notes that in visiting as many memorials as possible her aim is to create a data set of the visual and cultural aspects of roadside memorials in all their various forms. The author further notes that while roadside memorials are popular in many parts of the world, her research is strictly relegated to discussing their presence in Australia and New Zealand
