The relation between shipping and local enterprise in early 18th century Wales is explored, and historical experience in the wider debate about the relation between economic development and enterprise is placed in context. Business correspondence and accounts (1689-1714) of Z. Bevan of Laugharne in Carmarthenshire, a farmer and merchant whose interests extended into business and shipping, provide a great deal of evidence demonstrating the importance of coastal shipping. During this period Bevan co-owned a number of vessels shipping coal, salt, tobacco, and malt
