The author discusses and analyzes the validity of a suggested possibility of a theory of‘black’ aesthetics, a minor aspect in the domain of art of the major social upheaval in the U.S.A. involving Afro-Americans. He concludes that though there is a limited sense in which ‘black’ aesthetics can be used as a concept, this sense is trivial and inconsequential. He finds no serious, supportable meaning of a theory of ‘black’ aesthetics as distinguished from general aesthetic theory, any more than there is one of a theory of, for example, ‘white’ organic chemistry or of ‘Indian’ trigonometry.
