Drawing upon her experiences and upon primary literary sources (the latter including both critical writings and statements by dancer-choreographers), the author presents a descriptive account of the changes that occurred within modern dance over a period of about 20 years in the U.S.A. That the body is the ultimate locus for the change is made evident in the analysis: a shift in attitude toward the body and a new understanding of its status within the dance become apparent. In essence, what was once spiritual becomes fleshly and what was once a subservient instrument becomes a full-fledged reality in its own right. Some suggestions are made as to a possible relationship between the conceptual and the practical framework within which dancers changed dance and the phenomenological method
