Si de nombreuses etudes sur les aspects socio-politiques du Liban au 20 eme siecle font reference au mythe d'origine phenicien, l'origine, le caractere et le contenu de ce mythe sont tres peu connus. L'A. tente de repondre a un certain nombre d'interrogations sur le phenomene du phenicianisme au Liban, depuis son origine jusqu'a la formation du Grand Liban en 1920. Centrant son analyse sur le Liban et la Syrie, il montre que le mouvement national libanais fut pour l'essentiel chretien. Cependant, si ses representants, inspires par les penseurs et intellectuels francais, consideraient la combinaison de la foi chretienne et du nationalisme local comme un modele approprie, il n'ont jamais adopte l'ensemble de cette doctrine comme modele et vision du monde d'ensemble, inscrivant l'identite libanaise de facon selective dans le passe phenicien
