The position of dhimmis in Muslim society was in theory determined by Islamic law. It granted to the non-Muslim communities certain rights to internal organization, communal and cultural autonomy and protection by the government. At the same time it confirmed and symbolized the inherent superiority of the Muslim over the non-Muslim. The restraints of Islamic law, however, did not necessarily reflect historical reality. On occasions the dhimmi communities were harassed and persecuted beyond the limits of the law and frequently the dhimmi could achieve status, wealth, and even political power which went far above his legal inferiority. The factors which, in addition to the pronouncements of the law, determined the actual position of the dhimmi at any given moment in history can be summarized as follows
Autonomy · Chinese law · Comparative law · Economics · Government (linguistics · Islam · Israeli law · Municipal law · Political science · Politics · Position (finance · Power (physics · Sharia · Sociology · African history and culture analysis · History · Islamic Studies and History · Jewish and Middle Eastern Studies · Law · Philosophy
