I Consular despatches since the beginning of the century concerning the Jewish community in Baghdad usually stressed the fact that it was the largest single group in the city. Numbers given in 1904 by a French ViceConsul were 40,000 out of a population of 60,000 in the whole vilayet, the highest proportion I have come across. In 1910 a figure of 45-50,000 was given in a British consular report written by H. D. Shohet. 1 According to the last official yearbook of the Baghdad vilayet quoted in the Arab Bulletin No. 66, October 21, 1917, the population figures for the city of Baghdad were as follows

Ancient history · Archaeology · Genealogy · Geography · Judaism · Library science · Monarchy · Political science · Politics · Population · Sociology · Yearbook · Archaeology and Historical Studies · Demography · History · Islamic Studies and History · Jewish and Middle Eastern Studies · Law
