This contribution offers a new interpretation of Martial 14.94, based on the properties of glass and silver. The glass toreumata are identified as mold-blown vessels shaped like Hercules’ wooden club. Linguistic results include the discovery of an as yet unrecorded use of ardere and the conclusion that Martial does not use audax in a special sense to describe cheap glass that does not need to be handled with care. A discussion of the poem’s relationship to Martial 12.74 is appended
