Partial agreement, which manifests itself in certain coordinate structures in English, offers an unusual opportunity to investigate the nature of the computational system employed in second-language acquisition. The experiment on which we report here suggests that even in the absence of experience and instruction, second-language learners arrive at a system of partial agreement for English that is indistinguishable from the one employed by native speakers. This supports the view that at least certain aspects of the computational system employed for first-language acquisition remain available to adult language learners
