Giacomo Emilio Carretto (1939-2015) was an independent scholar who devoted his researches to the Turkish world, to its literature and its history. These two contributions tray to trace a memory of his long activity and his role in the history of Italian Oriental studies. The first part takes under consideration his researches on literature and history. The second part deals with the role he played in the debate on the Oriental studies in Italy
