NED WARD, author of the well-known London Spy, was the uninhibited host of the King's Head Tavern near Gray's Inn Queen Anne's day. He was sometimes pilloried and mauled by the Whigs because he catered the High Church, antiwar party. In his youth he had shipped the West Indies, to monkeyland, Pope says of him; all of his life Ward was associated with seafaring men. When the War of the Spanish Succession was at a low ebb, especially at sea, he yielded the urge set down his scurrilous opinion of the English navy. This he did a series of sketches in black and white, called The Wooden World Dissected, the Character of a Ship of War, that great Wooden Horse of Nature for the Accommodation of all such as want ride
