Airaq al-Amir, 20 km. west of Amman in Jordan, is the site of the Hellenistic estate of the Tobiads, a Jewish family dating back to the Babylonian Exile of 586 B.C.E. The caves and other significant features, including a large monument, the Qasr al-Abd, were described in some detail by Josephus, and his work led to its rediscovery in 1818. One of the first serious explorers to visit the estate was Félicien de Saulcy, who published vivid details and accurate drawings of the remains. However, though his romantic interpretation of the ruins has not stood the test of time, his work has proved valuable to more recent research
