Accusations of antisemitism were levelled at Rainer Werner Fassbinder's play The Garbage, the City and Death. Vera Ebels‐Dolanová analyses the text in the light of attitudes towards Jews in post‐Holocaust Holland and West Germany, and demonstrates that this antisemitism stemmed less from the portrayal of antisemitic characters, than from the anti‐Jewish stereotypes to which Fassbinder adhered, amid the German repression of guilt feelings
