The attitude of the American Catholic community in the 1930s towards Father Charles E. Coughlin, an antisemitic populist cleric active on the right‐wing fringe of American politics, has been distorted by progressive Catholic historians. His support was widespread within the Catholic hierarchy and among the Catholic public at large, a stand to be understood against the background of the domestic concerns and international orientations of American Catholicism at the time
