This book is a major contribution to Nietzsche studies. While it focuses mainly on the Genealogy of Morality, the work generally taken to contain Nietzsche's most sustained arguments and many of his central contributions to philosophy, the book offers an overall interpretation that draws on Nietzsche's total oeuvre. Leiter presents his argument with a high standard of rigour, clarity and scholarship. Non-specialists will be delighted to find such a lively and accessible entry to Nietzsche's thought which clearly lays out Nietzsche's relevance, especially for moral philosophy. Nietzsche specialists will disagree with Leiter on various issues; in which case they will need to attend carefully to Leiter' s often subtle formulations, and hone their positions against what he actually says rather than easy caricatures of his position. If they do so, they will be surprised by the resilience of his interpretation. This is a book that can reward both the Nietzsche dilettante and the specialist. Leiter' s guiding assumptions about method set him very firmly within the camp of Anglo-American analytic philosophy. He opens with a forthright attack on the trend of reading Nietzsche as a postmodernist thinker
