For a long time, American experience fascinated European intellectuals. Scholarly interest grew considerably after World War II as authors of “Watersheds in Time and Space” have recently shown. But the reflection in the academe on both sides of the ocean did not necessary follow same paths. In each country, themes and styles of writing American history have differed, conditioned by local intellectual traditions, trends, actual political atmosphere, public life, and public discourse.1 Since the 1980s, historians undertook broader and more systematic reflections about existing historical writings on U.S. history in Europe. For example, Lewis Hanke edited Guide to the Study of United States History Outside the U.S., 1945–1980 as the first large project that tried to systematize historical achievements globally.2 Years later, the volume
