The Polish Heritage Center (PHC) in Panna Maria, Texas, began as a vision of Bishop Emeritus John Walter Yanta to create an institution in honor of the first Polish settlement in Texas in 1854. Arriving in Texas from Upper Silesia, Polish immigrants under the leadership of Father Leopold Moczygemba arrived in Panna Maria, establishing the first Polish community and Polish Catholic Church in the United States. Faced with unfamiliar customs and a sometimes-harsh environment in times of severe drought or flooding, the community flourished, creating other Polish settlements in Texas such as Kosciusko, Bandera, and McCook. The Polish immigrants retained their identity and culture, leaving a rich legacy of community, faith, and family. It is these three themes Bishop Yanta wanted to prevail with the construction of the Polish Heritage Center in honor of the Polish immigrants to Texas, including his own ancestors.Construction of the Polish Heritage Center broke ground in 2016, and the center opened its doors to the public in October 2021. Celebrating the proud history of Polish immigrants to Texas, the center is a state-of-the-art institution offering visitors of all religions, races, and ages an immersive educational experience of Polish history from its roots to contemporary times, with emphasis on the Polish Texas immigrants. The Polish Heritage Center offers visitors in-depth insights into the history of Poland and the Polish immigrants through an exhibit featuring photographs, art, and artifacts, an award-winning twenty-six-minute film, library, archives, and audio wands that provide additional information to the exhibit label texts and is offered in Polish, English, Spanish, and a children's version. The center is proud to be a site that honors Polish history and culture, while sharing with future generations the legacy and traditions left behind by the Polish immigrants to Texas. The Polish Heritage Center's library will contain a myriad of books as well as a space for research and instruction. The library is expected to open by the end of 2022. The space will not only offer to everyone a trove of locally focused materials such as artifacts, photographs, and genealogical records, but also books covering a wide array of Polish history, culture, religion, economics, and cookbooks. Ranging from the founding of Poland to the present day, the center's books trace Polish immigration and the impact of Polish culture on American communities such as Panna Maria. There will be a wide scope of research topics, including politics, wars, religion, and culture. The library will also boast a technology station composed of computers for visitors to conduct additional research. The research station comes equipped with Ancestry.com, Microsoft Office, and the PHC is proud to have a collaboration with Janet Ebrom and the Silesian Profiles Committee, who have generously donated the online database of the Silesian Profiles in addition to the hardcover books and physical documents. This database contains documents and information regarding the original settlers to Texas, providing research materials for descendants to trace their family history. The library will also serve as a site where patrons can have access to archival materials. At the center's educational and instructional space, guests will have access to a plethora of sources and materials not just limited to books; they can also interact with different artifacts, such as photographs from the local Polish community in Panna Maria. The library will serve all those interested in learning more about the Polish impact on Texas history and the settlements that were founded. Even those of Polish descent not from Texas will have the chance to learn about Polish history and its influence throughout the United States, through books focusing on Polish immigration and its impact in places such as Chicago, Illinois. Currently, the librarian is working on the library/archives website and catalogs. The PHC catalogs are made accessible through the software Past Perfect and will be made available online for potential users to see what sources the center offers. The main aim of the library and archives is to offer all types of information regarding Polish heritage to its patrons, regardless of reading for research or pleasure. Another great aspect of the library and archives are records pertaining to the names of Polish immigrants, allowing visitors to track their genealogy. A goal of the center is to be able to aid members of the Polish community in genealogical research. There will be various databases filled with family names and histories dating back to the 1850s that genealogical researchers and families can immerse themselves in. Records include but are not limited to ship manifests documenting immigration from Poland to the states, birth certificates, wedding licenses, and land records. With the help of patrons and donors, the PHC hopes to continue to add to this amazing project. The PHC began the project of scanning photographs and documents provided by community members, and will resume this project, making available the materials and family records donated to the public. With such a wide range of topics, the PHC library and archives mission is to become an ongoing site of research and instruction, providing information and education of the rich history of Panna Maria and the Polish communities through 2D and 3D objects, primary, and secondary literature. The goal is to provide valuable information and knowledge and to be inclusive of everyone that is eager to learn more about Polish history. The PHC welcomes donations of books, photographs, artifacts, and so forth that fit with the center's mission for research. To stay up to date on the latest PHC news and events please visit our website, http://www.polishheritagecentertx.org
