This article investigates the meaning, scope and diverse interpretations given to the word ‘rangatiratanga’, both historically and in contemporary New Zealand. The analysis examines views about rangatiratanga, and about the idea of Maori sovereignty, in relation to the Treaty of Waitangi as well as to broader arguments in which both empirical and moral claims are advanced. The article concludes by linking discussions about these matters to ideas about freedom, security, justice and injustice, in order to develop more constructive ways to approach the definition (and application) of rangatiraranga to New Zealand society
