Openshaw S. (1982) The siting of nuclear power stations and public safety in the UK, Reg. Studies 16, 183–98. The planned expansion of nuclear power generation and the associated public safety aspects makes the choice of nuclear power station sites a very important issue. The paper considers current siting procedures and the tendency to neglect the importance of siting as an additional safety measure. The nature of past and present siting policies are examined and a number of deficiencies identified. A computer model, TIRION, is then used to assess the possible effects of severe reactor accidents at each of the current nuclear power station sites. Finally, methods are demonstrated that can be used both to search for optimally safe sites and to measure the suboptimality of current sites.
