MOLLE W., BOECKHOUT S. and VOLLERING A. (1987) The RESPONS model: an operational two-level regional economic model for the Netherlands, Reg. Studies 21, 107–120. For many regional planning purposes, employment growth is an essential input. The understanding of the dynamics of that variable makes for better forecasts of others. The RESPONS model is designed to project employment by sector and region. RESPONS stands for Regional Economic and Social Planning in the Netherlands, the S indicating Sectoral change. The RESPONS model consists of submodels for two geographical levels. The first, which uses a fairly detailed sectoral classification, produces projections for seven large zones in the Netherlands. The second distinguishes five industries and eighty small regions. The two submodels are similar in structure, each consisting mainly of a set of equations for various industrial sectors. The dependent variable, ‘employment by sector’, is explained by independent variables representing locational advantages and disadvantages. An original structure has been developed to couple the two submodels and account for interindustrial and interregional effects. The model has been estimated for the periods 1960-5, 1965-70, 1970-5 and 1975–80; projections have been made for 1990 and 2000. RESPONS is now operational for planning purposes. RESPONS signifie Regional Economic and Social Planning in the Netherlands (Planification Régionale Economique et Sociale aux Pays-Bas), le S indiquant Sectoral (changements sectoriels).
