Dessant J. W. and Smart R. (1977) Evaluating the effects of regional economic policy: a critique, Reg. Studies 11, 147–152. A method of assessing the impact of regional economic policy has recently been suggested which, as originally presented, estimates the aggregate number of jobs created in the study region. This paper attempts to show that, in principle, the method can be developed to give a wider and firmer basis for evaluating policy by disaggregating the data in various ways. The weaknesses of both the original and the amended approach are then made explicit and it is argued that the results of the form of analysis outlined require confirmation through further study before they can be accepted with any confidence
