Nadkarni M. V. and Deshpande R. S. (1983) Growth and instability in crop yields: a case study of agriculture in Karnataka, South India, Reg. Studies 17, 29–39. Agricultural development in Karnataka, South India, has not only been mostly through increase in yields rather than in area, it has also significantly covered droughtprone areas and rainfed crops which have been relatively neglected elsewhere. In such a case would growth be at the cost of stability? It was found that fluctuations tended to be divergent and instability has increased. The paper explores the diverse contexts under which the association between growth and instability in crop yields arises, using disaggregated time-series and cross-section data and discusses the factors behind this association. Nadkarni M. V. and Deshpande R. S. (1983) Wachstum und Unbeständigkeit von Ernteerträgen—eine Fallstudie über die Landwirtschaft Karnatakas in Südindien, Reg. Studies 17, 29–39.
