La explicación funcional se ha considerado una forma de explicación errónea en las ciencias sociales, ya que no proporciona los micro-fundamentos de un explanandum social. En este artículo se sugiere que la explicación analítica de ciertos procesos sociales (los “procesos cumulativos”) requiere tanto la formulación de hipótesis de autorregulación como la provisión de mecanismos basados en una concepción reduccionista, no intencional, de la acción. Estas son, sin embargo, las características principales de una explicación funcional correcta
