The substantial downfall of the left in the 16 March 1986 French legislative elections was especially strong within the lower class electorale. It hit primarily the former communist voters, but the socialists were not spared. This regress was largely due to abstentions but also to inroads of the far right. The elections confirmed the movements noted in both local and European elections since 1981 (fall of the left and emergence of a strong far right force) and a clear improvement of the Socialist party compared to the previous period. This improvement for the socialist left has not really offset the geographie changes in the right/ left balance of the 1984 European elections but rather reinforced them
