War and revolution in Lenin, by Georges Haupt This is an analysis of the links between war and revolution in the thought and strategy of Lenin. Its aim is to find out what part war played - as a brake or a spur - in his strategy. Lenin does not appoint it a given place along the scale of factors, he considers it a secondary variable. When confronted with a particular historical fact, the outbreak of the first world war and the collapse of the International, Lenin, following the train of thought of Engels and Kautsky, tries to get the most out of the new situation in viev of what is for him essential: his strategy of the revolution. If, at the beginning, he sees war as the continuation of the same peace-time policy and believes that its first aim is to prevent the outbreak of the revolution, he soon comes to consider it as an acute crisis of capitalism in its monopolistic stage and he tries to use its destructive effects in favour of a revolutionary strategy in which it will become a constant element. So he puts the first world war in the perspective of cyclical crises which will actually produce more wars and more revolutionary situations. He thus avoids giving a definite date for a victorious socialist revolution whose centre would be in Russia "the weakest link in the capitalistic chain".
