Modern commentaries on Goethe's `Romische Elegie xv' have identified allusions and sources, but have devoted most of their attention to the first half of the elegy.' This part of the poem, it will be recalled, depicts Faustine sitting with her mother and uncle at a table in a Roman tavern. Knowing that she is secretly observed by her lover, who sits with German friends at a table nearby, the girl feigns carelessness, spills wine on the table, and traces a fleeting message with her finger. Her lover, the poet, thus recognizes the hour at which she will expect him during the coming night. The poem opens with a comparison. Like his ancient colleague
