A great number of mediaeval German literary works are transmitted in single manuscripts. Their state of preservation and apparent reliability vary enormously and consequently pose a host of problems especially for the editor of such texts. He must edit a uniquely transmitted work in a manner which makes the text readable and yet does not destroy manuscript evidence. It is shown that in the case of unique manuscripts a reconstruction of the original text is scarcely possible and that the only extant manuscript may in fact present a severely distorted version
