This report is addressed to the way behavioral treatment methods are used in practice along with their nonbehavioral counterparts. Information about the use of practice methods was obtained from questionnaire responses of 140 respondents engaged in direct practice who had attended at least one in-service training institute devoted in part or fully to the behavioral approach to interpersonal helping. A factor analysis of the responses disclosed a clear, interpretable factor structure involving six factors. There were two major factors, each representing polar extremes: popular sociobehavioral methods (e.g., positive reinforcement, behavioral assignments) and psychodynamic methods (e.g., use of relationship and interpretation to produce insight). The four minor factors were nonbehavioral evocative methods; quasi-legal, directive methods; esoteric behavioral methods; and esoteric nonbehavioral methods. Implications for the specialized and polarized use of treatment methods are discussed briefly
