This qualitative study examines black male joblessness from the perspective of black men themselves. Eighteen young black men, ages 16-30 years old from the West Side of Chicago, participated in the study. Categories for data analysis were structured around an analytical framework that explored the employment problems of young black men from the demand and supply sides of the labor market. Analysis revealed the effects of discrimination and economic restructuring on study respondents. Most had experienced labor market instability, believed that there has been a shift of employment from the inner city to the suburbs, and had experienced discrimination in hiring and on the job. Considerable differences were found in the aspirations and labor market hopes and expectations regarding education and self-motivation
