This article compares the procedures and outcomes of placements made by the New York Children's Aid Society and the Iowa Children's Home Society in the late nineteenth century. The New York society placed many children in the Midwest. The Iowa society had an in-state placement program. Despite criticism of the New York society's practice of out-of-state placement, this comparison reveals that there were many similarities between the two programs, and that the majority of both the Iowa and New York children remained in their last placement until they were grown with no recorded complaints
