Two systems of thought are prevalent in social work practice: ego psychology and general-systems theory. This article seeks to identify similarities in each set of ideas using ecological concepts of organism-environment relations as a bridge between them. It concludes that all three bodies of thought, while sharing certain emphases, have different origins and rest on different assumptions about human beings. Each is a useful frame of reference for the social worker, but for conceptual clarity and integrity their separateness should probably be maintained
