This study identifies and describes one downtown community's perceptions of and experiences with "mall people"-bag ladies, street people, and ex-patients from a mental hospital. Fifty-five people were interviewed, including merchants and their employees, and the staff of churches, social agencies, and public facilities. The study found that members of the downtown community have both positive and negative perceptions of and experiences with mall people. Reactions to mall people and to the provision of housing for them in the downtown area are varied and complex
