The social work profession has a long lineage of working with underserved communities. In an ever more multicultural society, Social Work Practice with African Americans in Urban Environments is an informative guide that continues the legacy of social work practice with diverse populations. This edited volume comprises 24 chapters by 44 clinical and professional social workers, coupled with administrators, professors, and doctoral students representing departments, colleges, and schools of social work. The book illuminates the plight and complexities faced by African Americans in urban settings. It covers important concepts and topics relevant to understanding and serving African Americans in urban settings; the history of social work in African American communities, children, families, and older African Americans; overall health; and community needs and issues. The book is organized into six sections, each addressing a specific area, thereby providing a well-integrated synthesis of chapters surrounding social work practice with African Americans in urban environments. These six sections can then be summarized into four overarching themes
