Arguing against prevailing social-scientific analyses which trace the sources and nature of ethical beliefs in South Africa purely to material, economic and/or political factors, this essay asserts the comparable significance of religious belief in shaping South African morals. By means of an outline of Afrikaner history and a comparison of Dutch Calvinism in its various contemporary forms (white and black, pro- and anti-apartheid), the essay explores the applicability and effectiveness of a Weberian approach to the understanding of a society's ethical convictions
