The main aim of this paper is to introduce Ingehart's way of measuring post-materialism. The paper does this in four parts. Firstly, it describes briefly the actual concept of 'post-materialism', secondly it shows how post-materialism is measured in social surveys and the proper indexes are computed. In the third part, it uses Czech(oslovak) survey data from WVS 1990 and EVS 1991 to show that Inglehart's twelve item battery does not work in the Czech(oslovak) environment. By means of Inglehart's original four-item battery it then describes the distribution and development of materialism and post-materialism in the Czech Republic from 1991 to 1999 using EVS 1991 and 1999 data, as well as the data from ISSP 1993. In the fourth part, the article presents some of the latest discussions between Inglehart and his opponents concerning the validity and reliability of the post-materialism index
