A recent and well-articulated line of thought has it that all literature is self-reflexive.1 Structuralist critics in particular hold to the view that the work of art invariably reveals itself in its own making. Be that as it may, the fact is that twentieth-century literature has exhibited an unprecedented self-consciousness and therefore has devoted itself special intensity to a scrutiny of its own nature and its structures.
