This casual understatement which already suggests art of sprezzatura, aims at the assurance that what is represented as a bozza, a sketch, is divested of all those inganni which come from the illusive effects of perspective art. As Woodhouse points out, Castiglione's modest disclaimer, that he is unable to portray the court as the great Michelangelo or Raphael would have done, conceals a deliberate reference to that most deceptively beguiling of artistic tricks and may not have been so unintentional as appears on the surface.2 The claim for a semplicita naturale, wihich will be attached to the courtier and to his environment, is the same claim for that naturalezza which, in Giorgio Patrizi's view, is found in the
