In this collection of fourteen essays, Albert Casullo gives a rigorous and systematic treatment of a priori justification and a priori knowledge. Casullo argues for the conceptual independence of the a priori from related notions that have often been identified with it such as analyticity, necessity, and rational revisability. He defends a minimal and theory-neutral account of a priori justification, according to which a belief is justified a priori if and only if it is justified (for a subject) by some non-experiential source. Casullo criticizes traditional arguments both for and against the existence of a priori knowledge, and he argues that the most promising strategy for establishing the existence of a priori knowledge is to identify empirical evidence for the existence of non-experiential sources of justification. The first six essays, published before his A Priori Justification (Casullo 2003), articulate the central thematic concerns of the book and lay the groundwork for subsequent discussion of specific topics. Of particular note is the inclusion of ‘A Priori Knowledge’, his contribution to Moser (2002). This comprehensive discussion of the concept of the a priori and whether a priori knowledge exists provides an excellent introduction to the topic. Philosophers who take an interest in the a priori will want to be familiar with the territory that it covers.
