The medieval chronicler Adam of Bremen (c. 1040–c. 1081) wrote about the worship of a curious idol that would bestow pleasure on humans. This idol was said to be located at Uppsala, in what is now Sweden, in the eleventh century. The pursuit of pleasure is a ubiquitous feature of human societies
