A 3-day population seminar for members of the press radio and television was held in Chiengma in Northern Thailand in May 1969. From the viewpoint of public communications this was Thailands most successful seminar on the population problem. Before this seminar there had never been a seminar in Thailand arranged specifically for members of the press radio or television. The objective of this seminar was to approach directly the media personnel in order to make a clear and informed presentation of the facts and a refutation of misconceptions about population and family planning. Seminar results supported the planners initial assumption of the importance of the media personnel - members of the press should not be ignored nor should it be assumed that they will on their own study the issue thoroughly and follow closely all related events. In Thailand there was a definite need to plan specifically for this group. After many months of discussion the Thai government has recently announced support fora voluntary netional family planning program to lower the high population growth rate. Even prior to this announcement the Ministry of Public Health had initiated a national Family Health Project. The attitude of the members of the press radio and television was most important during the months prior to the final decision.
