This study reports the first analysis of mortality differentials in Nepal. The objectives are to analyze differentials in infant and child mortality over time in 2 major geographical areas--the Hills and Terai; and to analyze differentials in child survivorship for education and landholding groups within these areas. Demographic surveys were conducted annually from 1975 through 1978 by the research and evaluation unit of the Family Planning/Maternal and Child Health Project. Districts were matched by size and density of population number of hospitals and health posts ethnic composition and the proportions of males and females with no education. The sample design involved selection of panchayats (a political unit perhaps equivalent to a county) and their wards (villages). The proportion of child ever born surviving by the age of the mother and the percentage change between 1975 and 1978 is given. Also given is the proportion of children ever born surviving by year and husbands education and landholding. Survival varied directly with education and landholding. Possible explanations for the findings include the presence of family planning and maternal and child health programs and differential access to and utilization of health care and health facilities
