This volume contains in part the proceedings of a conferece organized by Family Health International and held in Manila the Philippines in October 1983. It includes a series of 11 orioinal papers describing for the 1st time the total contraceptive impact of breast feeding in 1) a traditional preliterate society in Highland New Guinea 2) in 2 affluent westernized communities in Australia both committed to prolonged breast feeding and 3) in less affluent societies in Mexico and the Philippines. The reasons underlying a womans choice of whether or not to breast feed and for how long are also discussed together with the role of health professionals in encouraging the practice and the factors in present-day society that tend to discourage it. Finally there is a review of the health benefits of breast feeding both for the mother and the child
