In 1970 a survey designed as a pretest for a national study of American female teen-agers was conducted among 372 never-married white and black women between the ages 15-19. 13% of the white females and 39% of the blacks had ever had intercourse with the percentage increasing with age. Of those who had intercourse less than 25% of whites had experienced intercourse before age 16 while the percentage was 46% for blacks. Sexually-active whites had intercourse more frequently than their black counterparts. Blacks however had a higher pregnancy rate than whites largely because contraceptives are 1st used by blacks about 1 year after 1st intercourse. White women on the other had begin using contraception soon after 1st intercourse and use contraception more regularly. Whites would prefer to have the 1st baby at a slightly later age than black women -- 23.5 as opposed to 22.3. Both races expressed an ideal family size of more than 3 children with whites preferring slightly more on the average
