In 1968 a study was conducted in 4 barrios of Honduras to obtain information on an urban low-income population with regard to health and family planning and to assess the effects of an educational mass media campaign on the demand for family planning services. Before the 5 week campaign only 6% of those interviewed mentioned family planning as a service of the health center while afterwards 29% mentioned it. The percent seeking family planning or visiting the health center increased significantly after the campaign. The number of current users of contraception who had used less than one month and the number of pill users also increased significantly. The success of the radio part of the campaign was greater than that of pamphlets soundtruck or films. The campaign proved especially successful in drawing new users rather than women seeking different methods. It is concluded that short run intensive family planning campaigns are economical effective and feasible among poorly educated urban dwellers in Latin America
